Blessings in a Jar

Every time something good happens to you, write it down on a slip of paper and place it in a jar. On New Year’s Eve, open the jar and read all the positive things that happened to you that year. There's no need to always wait till NYE. Open up the jar anytime you are feeling down and need to cheer yourself up. Reading the slips of paper out loud will remind you of all the good things that have happened to you and keep you from falling into a negative spiral.

Keep a Journal

Write one thing that you are grateful for every night before you go to bed. For example, you can write: I am grateful that my parents are in good health or I'm grateful that I did well on my presentation at work. Remembering ways in which we are blessed helps us to put things in perspective. No matter how much of a bad day you had, someone else had it worse. Always remember that.

Do Something

Being active in your community and helping others is another great way to keep things in perspective. You'll also feel really good knowing that you are doing your part in making your community a better place. Volunteer at an orphanage, start a clothes drive or help out at a nursing home. Remember that 'charity begins at home'. Many people volunteer extensively but don't seem to make helping out their family and friends a priority as well. You can help your best friend move into her apartment or help your dad file all his paperwork. Keeping busy also doesn't let you dwell on any negativity.

Unplug

While we definitely encourage being informed on what's going on in the world, sometimes it can get a bit much. Being 'plugged in' all day makes is easier to absorb all the bad news in the world and fosters emotional distress. Try to unplug every now and then for a couple of days. Read a book, learn something new, relax and meditate.

one thing I’m sure of is that tough times don’t last. For the sake of hope of things getting better, I don’t worry too much. I listen to music or have a long gist with a friend. when I talk about how I feel to someone that understands me, I feel like it is solved already.
