How to: Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Cleaning makeup brushes isn’t our favorite pastime, but it is necessary for healthy skin and flawless makeup application. Don’t toss your makeup brushes because they’re too dirty, simply clean them! Below we explore easy and quick ways to clean your makeup brushes, sponges and beauty blenders.

To Begin: Organize your brushes in preparation for the big clean! Some people like to organize them by type and style. Other people may like to organize them from most dirty to least dirty. However you choose, take some time to gather all of your dirty makeup brushes and sponges for cleaning.

Using Product: There are several products (too many to list) designed for cleaning makeup brushes. Do you want to wash and then rinse your brushes out? Or would you prefer simply wiping the brushes down? Sephora has an incredible amount of cleansers to choose from, and step by step instructions on how to perform the cleanse.
Makeup brush cleaning gloves have come into the spotlight as a quick and easy way to give your brushes a great clean. Simply apply the brush cleanser and scrub the bristles over the palm of the glove. It removes all the built up gunk from your brushes without destroying the bristles.

Household DIY: Don’t have a brush cleanser or glove on hand? Don’t fret. Here is an easy way to clean your brushes using common household products.
All you need is olive oil, baby shampoo OR dawn dish soap, and a small bowl or plate. Start by adding a squirt of shampoo or soap and some olive oil into the bowl or plate. Dip your brush into the mixture, and then swirl the bristles on your palm. All the pigment and dirt build up will wash right off into the sink and you will be left with a clean brush!
