Setting Goals For The New Year

The new year is the perfect time to start fresh and comes with a whole new world of possibilities. Before the new year begins, people around the world write down their resolutions for the new year. Many of these resolutions will be broken or forgotten by January 2nd.

Instead of setting resolutions, that are usually not specific and can’t be measured, choose to set goals instead. Realistic goals.

Setting goals is a great way to keep focused throughout the year. If you're thinking of switching jobs, moving to a new city or pursuing more education, you can first check to make sure that your plans align with what you are trying to achieve that year.

For example, lets say your goal is to own your own business by the end of the year. You’ve broken down that goal and know that in order to do that you need to spend time working to save money for the business and at the same time interning/volunteering to learn more about the industry. Suddenly, you have the opportunity to travel around Europe for 3 months with your best friend. Does that fit in with your goals? Not only would you use the money meant for your business on travel, you would also be using up the time meant for gaining more experience. The travel opportunity, while it sounds like fun, does not align with your goals. The smart thing to do would be to turn it down.

When thinking about your goals for the new year, be sure that you are realistic with the time and effort each will take and don’t set more than 3-4. Be sure to check in from time to time with your goals to make sure you are still on track. All your goals do not need to be professionally based. Aspire to do something exciting or different and we always encourage you to learn a new skill.

Lastly, the end of the year is a time for self-reflection. Think about ways you can improve your self next year. While setting goals for what you want to do, also write down what you don’t want to do to avoid making the same mistakes year after year.

Most important of all, go into the new year with a positive mindset. It’s going to be a great year. Have a Happy New Year!
