How To: Decorate without breaking the bank

Decorating can be a huge expense, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you are decorating a small bedroom or your entire home, there are many, many ways to go about decorating to your taste and liking without breaking the bank. From the early planning stages to completing DIY projects, you can fulfill the look of high priced décor without exceeding your budget.

Where to start - Begin with a plan and a budget. What look are you going for? Websites like Pinterest and HouseBeautiful have tons of articles and posts with decorating ideas and color schemes that are easy to follow. Once you have an idea of the direction you’d like to go in, create a budget. How much are you willing to spend to create your dream space? You do not have to set your budget high to get what you’d like. But remember that you may have to compromise on some items to remain within your budget constraints.

DIY – After you’ve determined your plan and budget, it's time to begin decorating! We’ve all seen those amazing DIY projects that can turn an ordinary room into an extraordinary, chic one. DIYs do take some vision but you don’t have to have immense creativity to complete one. Check out sites such as HGTV for easy step-by-step instructions on how to complete your project. If you are creatively inclined, you can create your own DIY from scratch. Although it may take some time to complete, it will definitely save you quite a bit in the long run. You can avoid paying a decorator or a “handy-man”.

Thrifting and Décor Dupes – Looking for art or paintings to decorate your walls? Try visiting some local thrift stores. They have been known to have some hidden treasures and very cheap finds. Is there an expensive piece of furniture that you must have? Try looking for a cheaper (not name brand) version of the item. Amazon and eBay carry several items for much less than the retail price. Always remember to check item details and features to make sure it's as close to the original as possible.
